Homeschool Abuse Counseling in Uptown Dallas

For parentified children who grew into over-functioning adults

Therapy for Homeschool Trauma in Texas

You didn’t feel safe in your home but you were taught not to question it. Outside resources and community were so limited that you never had a chance to tell an objective adult what was really going on behind the smiling faces they saw at church or bible study. Your education took second place to serving as mediator to your parents or caregiving for younger siblings who felt like your own children much of the time. Intense isolation meant that your social skills never had a chance to blossom, leaving you missing out on important developmental milestones. The beliefs you adopted around the world outside your home kept you in a loop of anxiety, overthinking, and constant pressure to achieve standards that still feel impossible to reach.

Homeschooling isn’t always abusive, but if it was for you, you may carry a unique kind of pain not shared by many

Signs of Homeschool Abuse in Texas:

-Isolation from social activities, experiences, and skill-building

-Physical punishment causing bodily harm and emotional terror

-Educational neglect including lapses in developmentally appropriate milestones, putting the child in charge of their own or their siblings education, failure to pass standardized assessments, etc.

-Lack of basic needs being met including proper nourishment, medical visits/check-ups, sleep hygiene, physical education, etc.

-Delayed emotional or intellectual development

-Weaponization of spiritual/religious principles to instill fear and unquestioning obedience in children (i.e. faith used as a form of control and coercion).

Homeschool Abuse Counseling is a Recovery of Your Voice, Autonomy, and Story

The lack of language around the trauma of homeschool abuse is a cultural issue, not your personal failing. Your voice is unique, it is your most powerful advocate for a past self who didn’t have one, and it deserves to be heard now. My therapy services for survivors of homeschool trauma in Texas were created from a place of deep empathy for neglected children who grew into over-functioning adults as well as those deconstructing their faith or grappling with the religious coercion often involved in homeschool abuse. As a born and raised Texas, my personal experience with the unique social attitude, evangelical underpinnings, and political regulations towards homeschooling shape my approach and efforts to provide culturally attuned services that respect the complexities of your experience.

Where you previously had to stay silent to protect your abusers, you are now invited to use your voice to process your full story without shame. Where you used to have to earn love with performance, you are now welcome to be enough just by existing. Where you lacked resources before, tools are available to you to process your memories, clarify your values and belief systems, and explore what it’s like to be in your body without fear.

  • The trauma that homeschool abuse survivors carry is a distinct experience that the mental health field is still building language around. As such, it deserves a personalized approach that includes assessing for types of trauma that are often not adequately addressed in traditional approaches, such as educational or social neglect, parentification, sibling abuse, unmet developmental milestones, etc. Attachment Lab’s approach seeks to adapt evidence-based trauma therapies to the unique needs of homeschoolers and gives them the space to contextualize their abuse freely without judgement, disbelief, or minimization from the clinician.

  • My heart as a clinician is to raise awareness around types of trauma that are not given a voice in culture and serve demographics that feel isolated in their experiences. Homeschoolers fall into this category, particularly in Texas, and my mission is to fill the gap in care. As a survivor myself, I also have deep empathy for the experiences of my clients and desire to turn that into a space where they can feel truly understood without having to over-explain a complex experience.

  • Even if you are not a resident of Texas, you are welcome to contact me to seek help in finding referrals for specialists in your state. Even if I can’t be your therapist, part of my job as a clinician is to advocate for social repair and that involves developing a community of clinicians across the country who can serve as resources.
